Full Beam Gas Log Splitter Manual

Does the log splitter need assembly?

Yes, the full beam will require 2 people for assembly and the half beam only requires 1 person for assembly. Refer to the owner’s manual for instructions.

Does this come with hydraulic fluid?

Yes, all products that require hydraulic fluid are shipped with hydraulic fluid.

What type of hydraulic fluid should I use?
  • 10W AW32
  • ASLE H-150
  • ISO 32
How can you check you have correctly attached your tires to the axle?

Firmly tighten the wheel ensuring the washers are seated fully, then back off the axle nut to be loose again, finally finger tighten it so that you can slide the cotter pin thru the axle hole.

Is there anything else that should be checked besides the engine if the unit is hard to pull start?

Insure the hydraulic lever is in neutral position.

Should I leave fuel stored in my unit?

No, fuel should not be stored in the unit. It is important to prevent gum deposits from forming in the fuel system. If the unit is to be stored for longer than 30 days — drain the fuel tank, retighten the gas cap, start the unit and let it run until it stops.

Does it come with a log cradle?

Yes, our gas log splitters come with 2 log cradles.

Can I sharpen the splitting wedge?

Over time your YARDMAX log splitter wedge will dull. If you notice decreased performance, we recommend sharpening the wedge using a fine-toothed file, smoothing any burrs or crushed areas along the cutting edge. For questions about sharpening the wedge, call us at 844-YARDMAX.

How do I choose between Half Beam and Full Beam designs?

The performance is equal between models so you should choose based upon your usage needs.

The Full Beam is easier to tow because it is additional weight and size. The longer and wider design makes it more stable on the road.

The Half Beam requires only one person to assemble, it is lighter therefore easier to move around by hand and to change from horizontal to vertical, lastly because of its compact design it is easier to store in the off season. The half beam design also allows operators to split from either side of the machine due to the engine and reservoir placement.

How often do I need to change the fluids?

You only need to change the hydraulic fluid every 150 hours of use. Please refer to your engine manual for recommended oil change intervals.

Is the oil filter replaceable?

Yes, you can easily remove and replace it when doing regular maintenance. You will need a HU-816 paper filter.

Are fenders included with this product?

Fenders are included for the half beam models.

What size log splitter do I need?

Determining the size of log splitter can be found here.

Does the log splitter come with a work table?

The work table is an optional accessory and can be purchased through YARDMAX, get in touch with us directly at 844-YARDMAX or support@yardmax.com.

What is the difference between horizontal and vertical splitters?

In the vertical position splitters are better when working with logs that are very heavy. Large logs can be rolled into place at ground level and split with ease. In the horizontal position splitters will need logs lifted on to them. Smaller logs that are easier to handle, resting on the beam of a horizontal splitter. All YARDMAX gas log splitters can work in the horizontal position and are easily adjusted to the vertical position.

Why is it hard to pull the starter rope to start the log splitter?

The control valve lever might still be engaged. Position the control valve lever to neutral, this will free up the tension on the starter rope.

Why do I only tighten the wheel nut to finger tight on the Gas Log Splitter?

First tighten down the axle nut with your wrench to seat the bearing, then back it off to be finger tight to ensure the wheel spins freely. Don’t forget to add the cotter pin to secure the nut.

What happens if I fully tighten the wheel nut?

This will prevent the wheel from spinning freely and likely cause the wheel to lock up when towing. Causing damage to the machine when towing. This will also void your warranty.

How much oil does my engine need?

16 – 20oz

Does my splitter come with oil in it?

Engine does not but Hydraulics do.

What should I do if my engine won't start?

Check if the switch is ‘on’, fill with oil & fuel. Turn the fuel line to open and the Choke to closed. Still no luck – give us a call at 844-YARDMAX.

What should I do if I am pulling back the hydraulic handle fully but it is stopping early?

First ensure all of your wedge slide bolts are fully tightened down.

If all bolts are tight the problem is caused by the lower hydraulic pressure setting in hydraulic system when retracting.

Please take the following steps to increase the hydraulic pressure setting for retracting.

  1. Remove the plastic cover to access the hydraulic control valve. See photo “1-Removing the Plastic Cover of the Valve” attached.
  2. Loosen the lock nut by turning it counter-clockwise (it will be tight), using a 6mm hex head and a 22mm wrench. See photo “2-Loosing the Lock Nut” attached.
  3. Turn the pressure setting screw by 1/3 turn(cycle) (120 degree) clockwise each time with the 6mm hex head L-Key to increase the pressure setting. Continue turning it until the wedge retract smoothly and the valve is activated/restored when the cylinder completely reaches the bottom. See photo “3-Adjusting the Overflow Pressure” attached.
  4. Re-tighten the locknut and replace the plastic cover.
